On top of all that, Mandelieu offers to arty types of all kinds
a splendid palette of high quality cultural events, such as concerts,
theatre and exhibitions.
The Château de la Napoule, in the midst of pines and mimosas,
is the main attraction here. It is constructed in the medieval style
and architectural splendour will leave you lost for words. Many
international cultural exchanges take place in this large magisterial
building, decorated in region style. In 1951 Marie Clews founded
the association of art in order to protect the works of her husband,
the sculptor Henry Clews. Since 1987 the castle has welcomed artists
who come to stay there, seeking the calm and reflexion needed for
their work.
The castle itself rest upon Roman and Saracen ruins and was the
baronial home of the Counts of Villeneuve until the revolution.
It was only in 1918 that the ruined fortress was bought by the Clews,
who reconstructed the shell of the building according to their very
personal interpretation of the architecture of the Middle Ages.
The high ramparts shelter gardens designed in French styles by Marie
Clews, which blend harmoniously the styles of Classicism and Romanticism.
All of Henry Clew's works are to be found in this one place, giving
another charming facet to this
region.
